This Hate, It’s Killing Us

Checking facts, making thoughtful arguments, polite civil discourse, who has time for any of that? Arriving late to the social media party is decidedly not in fashion. One must strike first. Ready, fire, and then aim, that’s today’s battle cry.

Judge, lest we be called intolerant.

Lecture thy neighbor, so that others may know our virtue.

New Golden Rules for the New Puritans. People so right with Jesus they’ll happily destroy anyone who dares to question their orthodoxy.

A person can’t get any more right than that.

To agree with them is not enough. One must embrace them with an evangelical enthusiasm that is beyond reproach. Backsliders will be stoned, and refusing to throw the first stone is reason enough for one to be stoned as well.

This Neo-Puritanism is a plague, and it’s fueled by hate. A hate so pure, so just, that it makes any action moral and right. It’s a drug. A drug that allows one to justify anything we do, because we’ve been wronged, deeply wronged.

That’s a potent high.

Social media is just the needle, of course, just the delivery system.

A couple of days ago, the word on the Social Media Street was the man was going down. He was going down “if these reports prove to be accurate”…
